To enhance our Easter worship; to create opportunities to build friendships in our stake; and to create an opportunity to bear testimony to one another concerning the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, The Kearns North Stake will be staging a reader’s theater adaptation of act 2 of “Savior of the World” during the 2026 Easter season.
Savior of the World, Act II, His Resurrection
This act starts at the tomb where Peter, several of the Apostles, and other believers are gathered as the stone is rolled in front of the opening.
As it progresses, we’ll see and hear representations of Cleopas on the road to Emmaus, Mary Magdalene at the tomb, the Apostles and later Thomas as the Lord appears to them in the upper room, and other moments celebrating the Lord’s resurrection and His appearances to many.
The act culminates with the Ascension, the angels asking “… why stand ye gazing up into heaven …” (Acts 1:11), the chorus singing “Come, Lord Jesus” and the congregation joining in singing “Jesus, Once of Humble Birth” together with the cast.
What is a “reader’s theater”?
Reader’s theater, as it will be used for this production, is performed by actors in costume, but without elaborate sets or props, and without requiring memorization of lines.
When it’s a character’s turn to perform, the actor will approach a microphone on stage and read the lines.
We’ll focus on knowing the lines well enough that they can be delivered expressively, with power, passion, and conviction. The focus becomes the words being read rather than the elaborate set or staging, thus allowing the Spirit to bear witness of what is being spoken.
In our production, we’ll be working from recorded accompanimetnt, but with live singers ranging from solo parts to choir numbers.
